Applied Political Science

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) – 2 field degree program - Major Field


One degree program – two diplomas. Take the bilingual Bachelor and Master of Arts in Political Science at two renowned institutions – the University of Freiburg in Germany and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (IEP) at Aix-en-Provence, France. You will receive a sound academic education with practical phases. Experience two ways of life and two universities.

Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the career-oriented binational degree program in Applied Political Science conveys the principles of political science.

Admission: First semester:

restrictive admissions (University): Selection procedure (30 places)
(Knowledge of the French language at least level B2 of the CEFR, letter of motivation with explanation, 1st level: pre-selection of average German higher education entrance qualification grade and evaluation of letter of motivation, 2nd level: passed selection interview and weighted individual grades from the German higher education entrance qualification)

Germans and EU citizens: 90% of study spaces are granted in a selection procedure and 10% after a waiting period. Non-EU citizens (without German school-leaving certificate): do not take part in this selection procedure. Study spaces are granted according to a quota of 8% of the available spaces.

Remark: Please check again at the beginning of the application period to make sure that the admission requirements for this degree program have not changed in the meantime.

This is a joint degree program organized by the University of Freiburg and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (IEP), Aix-en-Provence. The courses are taught in French at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (IEP) in Aix-en-Provence and in German at the University of Freiburg. The degree is conferred by the University of Freiburg. The goal of the course of study is to provide students with the knowledge and abilities necessary for engagement with normative foundations, political processes, and decisions and for critical analysis of the functional logic of political institutions, processes, and systems. These skills are practiced within the context of a six-month internship. The field “applied political science“ encompasses the three subdisciplines of political science: “comparative political science,” “international politics,” and “political theory.” In addition, the program places special emphasis on comparative political culture. The interdisciplinary and comparative approach facilitates a rapid understanding of problems and allows students to orient themselves quickly in various topics. The academic and pedagogical experiences in the German and French higher education system offered by the program also promote the acquisition of cultural skills.

The tables with the results of the last selection processes allow you to see the assigned grade/number of points in the selection process which would have sufficed and what the waiting period would have been to secure admission. The assigned grade/number of points is based by subject on the average grade or weighted grades achieved in the German higher education entrance qualification, on test results and/or outcome of the selection interview, and also on professional or practical experience in the respective subject.

Applicants who are not nationals of EU member states or of signatory states to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or who are not equivalent to Germans pursuant to Section 1 (2) No. 2-3 HZVO (Baden-Württemberg University Admission Regulations) and/or do not hold a German higher education entrance qualification may not take part in the lottery procedure.

Lottery procedures are conducted in subjects with restricted admission where places are still available. Should places still be available after the final waiting list procedure, these are allocated in a lottery procedure. Application for participation in the lottery procedure must be made online and separately for each degree programme to which admission is sought. The application period for the winter semester is from 1 September to 30 September and for the summer semester from 1 March to 31 March. Applications received earlier or later than stipulated will not be considered.

The online application portal for the lottery procedure is only open during the application period.
