Comparative History of Modern Age
Master of Arts (M.A.)
If you are interested in the history of the modern era from the 16th century to the present, the process of transformation into modernity, and this from a comparative and intercultural perspective, then the University of Freiburg is the given place of study for you. An unusually broad range of courses, for example in German, Western and Eastern European, North American and East Asian history, as well as economic, social and environmental history, gives you the opportunity to broaden and deepen your specialist knowledge and methodological skills in an interest-oriented manner. In addition, you will specialize in one of the sub-periods of your choice (early modern period, 19th century or 20th/21st century), in which you will then also write the master's thesis.
In order to successfully study the Master's program in Comparative Modern History, you should...
- Be enthusiastic about historical events and contexts.
- have an interest in historical comparisons.
- like to work independently.
- think in a networked way.
- want to critically analyze, question and interpret historical sources.

Disclaimer
The versions of statutes with relevance to teaching and learning provided on this page by the Department of Legal Affairs (in particular admission and selection regulations as well as subject and examination regulations) are primarily for information purposes. This means that all amendments subsequently agreed upon by the University Senate have been integrated into the respective text of the original statutes; in the case of the examination regulations for bachelor's and master's degree programmes, this generally relates to extracts of the respective examination regulations (framework examination regulations, subject-specific provisions, and appendices).
The greatest care has been taken in writing these versions. Nevertheless, it cannot be entirely ruled out that errors may have occurred. Consequently, it is solely the officially announced statutes and statute amendments that are legally binding, i.e. as published in the Amtlichen Bekanntmachungen der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau [de] or, up to the year 2000, in the official gazette of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.
