Master's degree programme for teaching at secondary school - dual

Note: Subject to approval by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts in agreement with the Ministry of Culture, this degree programme is to be newly established for the winter semester 2024/2025.
From the winter semester 2024/25, the Master's degree programme Teaching Qualification for Secondary Schools - dual will provide access to teacher training in the subject combinations of computer science and mathematics or physics and mathematics for Bachelor's graduates in physics or computer science without previous didactic or pedagogical knowledge. In a compact three-year dual training programme supported by mentoring opportunities, the qualification for the teaching profession is coherently designed and remunerated from the first semester. Students receive the Master of Education degree after four semesters at the University of Freiburg. Several school practice phases at a grammar school in the Freiburg area, as well as the one-year preparatory service at the Seminar for Training and Further Education of Teachers (grammar school) in Freiburg, which follows the degree programme, combine an intensively supervised and compact training programme that paves the way into a new and diverse professional field.

The Master's degree programme is the first component of a three-year dual training programme. After two years, it leads to a Master of Education degree, which enables the transition to the preparatory service, a one-year training phase exclusively organised by the Seminar for Training and Further Education of Teachers (Gymnasium) in Freiburg (SAF Freiburg), after which the career qualification for the Gymnasium teaching profession in the subject combination studied (physics and mathematics or computer science and mathematics) is acquired. Students on the Master's degree programme Teaching Qualification for Secondary Schools - dual are in a public-law, financially remunerated employment relationship parallel to their studies and are assigned to a general secondary school in the Freiburg area for three years.

The lecture period is preceded by an initial four-week school placement, which is organised and carried out by the SAF Freiburg and is accompanied by courses in subject didactics and education/educational psychology at the seminar. A second five-week school placement takes place during the lecture-free period between semesters 1 and 2. The third practical school module is a school placement, which must be completed in parallel to semesters 3 and 4 of the Master's degree programme.

Throughout the Master's programme, courses at the University of Freiburg in the areas of subject didactics and educational sciences or education/educational psychology are coordinated and interlinked with the courses offered by the SAF Freiburg.

The Master's thesis can be written in one of the subjects or in the educational sciences. It is worth 15 ECTS credits. All credits for the four-semester Master's programme are recorded at the University of Freiburg, which also issues the Master's certificate. The SAF Freiburg is responsible for the subsequent one-year phase to acquire the teaching qualification.

An application to the Freiburg Regional Council is required in order to be employed in a public-law position. Further documents must be submitted: Proof of provisional admission to the Master's degree programme, birth certificate, medical health certificate, proof of participation in first aid training, proof of citizenship. Further information can be obtained from the degree programme coordinator.

Disclaimer
The versions of statutes with relevance to teaching and learning provided on this page by the Department of Legal Affairs (in particular admission and selection regulations as well as subject and examination regulations) are primarily for information purposes. This means that all amendments subsequently agreed upon by the University Senate have been integrated into the respective text of the original statutes; in the case of the examination regulations for bachelor's and master's degree programmes, this generally relates to extracts of the respective examination regulations (framework examination regulations, subject-specific provisions, and appendices).
The greatest care has been taken in writing these versions. Nevertheless, it cannot be entirely ruled out that errors may have occurred. Consequently, it is solely the officially announced statutes and statute amendments that are legally binding, i.e. as published in the Amtlichen Bekanntmachungen der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau [de] or, up to the year 2000, in the official gazette of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.
