Slavic Studies

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) – 2 field degree program - Major Field


Research in Slavic Studies can cover an extraordinary range that stretches from the Elbe to the Pacific. On the way it takes in poetry, prose and drama in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Bulgaria and Russia. Immerse yourself in the variety of Slavic languages and the wealth and historical importance of the Slavic cultural area. Slavic Studies is only taught at a very few universities and features small classes and optimal support. Thanks to its longstanding relationship with Gernot Erler, the German Coordinator for Intersocietal Cooperation with Russia, Freiburg is one of the most important centers of Slavic Studies in Germany.

The major field program in Slavic Studies teaches active skills in two Slavic languages and knowledge of the geography, history, cultural development, and current situation of the Slavic cultural area. The program focuses on linguistics, literature, regional and cultural studies, and language skills. Graduates are capable of analyzing and understanding historical, linguistic, and cultural processes and structures.
