Linguistics – Language, Communication, Cognition

Master of Arts (M.A.)


In the M.A. programme Linguistics – Language, Communication and Cognition, you can choose one of six specialisations (English Language and Linguistics, General Linguistics and Linguistic Diversity, German Linguistics, Romance Linguistics, Slavic Linguistics, and Language and Cognition). Our flexible programme structure allows you to organise your individual curriculum to be as specialised or as broad as you would like. The programme offers great opportunities to study abroad and gain first-hand experience in several linguistic fields of your choice.

To successfully study Linguistics – Language, Communication and Cognition you should:
  • Be interested in language and linguistics, communication and/or cognition
  • Have an interest in research on language and language use,
  • Enjoy investigating different linguistic phenomena independently,
  • Depending on your chosen field of specialization: the adequate language skills of English and/or German,
  • Depending on your chosen field of specialization: the adequate language skills of your target language(s).

German and/or English as well as, if applicable, Romance or Slavic languages

The M.A. programme qualifies students for academic careers and further qualifications in linguistics and cognitive sciences as well as in related disciplines such as philologies, communication and media sciences. It also qualifies students for non-university occupational fields that focus on language, cognition, communication and media. This includes, for example, areas of Natural Language Processing (e.g. search engine optimisation, development of speech recognition software, etc.), in media and publishing as well as journalism. In addition, jobs in public relations, science management, science foundations, international funding and development organisations or in the cultural sector are typical career goals for linguists. The intensive study of language and communication in their social and cultural context as well as the acquisition of competences in the area of data processing, organisation and presentation prepare students in many ways for these and other professional fields.
