Archaeological Sciences
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) – 2 field degree program - Minor Field
What do a Viking market, Medieval graves in the ruins of a chapel, and a Roman military base have in common? They have all been researched by the Institute of Archaeology (IAW) of the University of Freiburg, whose researchers and students unveiled revealed their long-hidden secrets. The University of Freiburg is home to an archaeological institute which covers one of the widest specialist ranges in the German-speaking region. During your studies you will discover the enormous versatility of archaeological science – in theory and practice.
Understanding the cultural development of humanity
Archaeological science is concerned with past cultures and how our ancestors lived. This involves the study of people’s material remains such as tools, grave gifts and buildings, but also inscriptions and art objects.
With us, you will gain an insight into every era, from the first evidence of humanity to Early Modern times. You will learn about the various cultures from the whole area of the Mediterranean and the southwestern part of the Asian continent. You will master methods and theories and also undertake practical work.
On excursions and training digs you will have the opportunity of strengthening your knowledge on site, gaining insights into the profession and even studying original items.

The B.A. program in Archaeological Sciences provides a solid grounding in the content, methods, and theories of archaeological research. It focuses both on archaeological records and monuments still located at their original site and objects from excavations and collections. The course of study covers Europe, the Mediterranean area, and the Near East in all periods, from the first appearance of humans to the early modern period. Students choose an emphasis in four of the following six archeological areas: prehistoric archaeology, Near Eastern archaeology, classical archaeology, archaeology of the Roman provinces, Christian archaeology and Byzantine art history, and early historical archaeology and the archaeology of the Middle Ages.

This means that all amendments subsequently agreed upon by the University Senate have been integrated into the respective text of the original statutes; in the case of the examination regulations for bachelor's and master's degree programmes, this generally relates to extracts of the respective examination regulations (framework examination regulations, subject-specific provisions, and appendices).

Consequently, it is solely the officially announced statutes and statute amendments that are legally binding, i.e. as published in the Amtlichen Bekanntmachungen der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau [de] or, up to the year 2000, in the official gazette of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.
