Polyvalent dual-major bachelor's degree program - Major field (with secondary-school teaching degree option)

History is not just what happened 2000 years ago. We encounter history every day in the form of stories, monuments, street names and the shape of our society. Engaging with the past means understanding the present better and learning for the future. And in this way to adopt an entirely new point of view – including of things that were already history 2000 years ago.

The degree program in history (teaching degree) deals with European and world history since antiquity. The knowledge historians acquire is always based on historical evidence from the epoch under study. By studying these sources with the help of a critical method, historians attempt to build up a solid knowledge base concerning historical events. The goal is not just to reconstruct political events but also to study the economic developments, social structures, cultural trends, and mentalities of the epoch under study. Historians call traditional interpretations of historical events into question again and again by approaching them anew from a contemporary perspective. Although the teaching degree program in history is primarily geared toward students who wish to pursue a career as a secondary school history teacher, it is also suitable for those who are interested in working in other professions (journalism, museums, publishing, public relations).

Disclaimer
The versions of statutes with relevance to teaching and learning provided on this page by the Department of Legal Affairs (in particular admission and selection regulations as well as subject and examination regulations) are primarily for information purposes. This means that all amendments subsequently agreed upon by the University Senate have been integrated into the respective text of the original statutes; in the case of the examination regulations for bachelor's and master's degree programmes, this generally relates to extracts of the respective examination regulations (framework examination regulations, subject-specific provisions, and appendices).
The greatest care has been taken in writing these versions. Nevertheless, it cannot be entirely ruled out that errors may have occurred. Consequently, it is solely the officially announced statutes and statute amendments that are legally binding, i.e. as published in the Amtlichen Bekanntmachungen der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau [de] or, up to the year 2000, in the official gazette of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.

For study and examination regulations, see the "Statutes" section above.
