Italian

Polyvalent dual-major bachelor's degree program - Major field (with secondary-school teaching degree option)

Italian is one of the great European languages of the civilized world. Italy, as the origin and center of the Roman Empire, is not only the cradle of the Romance-speaking world and to a significant extent of western culture as a whole, as can be seen from numerous historical sites and much evidence, but it was and still is a critical stimulus for other cultural areas – such as in the art and literature of the Renaissance, in the opera of the 19th Century and the avant-garde of the 20th. Studying Italian enables a deeper insight into this world and opens up communication with 85 million speakers.

This course of study concentrates on the Italian language, literature, and culture in their historical and sociocultural context. It is thus divided into two main areas: linguistics and literary and culture studies. Courses in these areas provide students with the necessary skills for academic study of Italy as well as general philological skills such as literary interpretation and academic writing (analytical reading, writing one’s own texts). In addition, the curriculum also includes language courses designed to help students achieve fluency in oral and written Italian. Since Italian studies are part of the larger area of Romance philology, students are also required to acquire basic skills in at least one other Romance language.

Disclaimer
The versions of statutes with relevance to teaching and learning provided on this page by the Department of Legal Affairs (in particular admission and selection regulations as well as subject and examination regulations) are primarily for information purposes. This means that all amendments subsequently agreed upon by the University Senate have been integrated into the respective text of the original statutes; in the case of the examination regulations for bachelor's and master's degree programmes, this generally relates to extracts of the respective examination regulations (framework examination regulations, subject-specific provisions, and appendices).
The greatest care has been taken in writing these versions. Nevertheless, it cannot be entirely ruled out that errors may have occurred. Consequently, it is solely the officially announced statutes and statute amendments that are legally binding, i.e. as published in the Amtlichen Bekanntmachungen der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau [de] or, up to the year 2000, in the official gazette of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.
