Living in Freiburg

Housing

You have various options for finding a room in Freiburg:

  • After registering with the online portal Mobility Online, you can apply for a room in the halls of residence.

  • You can also look for a room or flat on the open housing market. Many students let out their rooms furnished when they go abroad for a few months.

Insurance

  • Health insurance: You must take out health insurance in order to matriculate at the University of Freiburg. Students from EU countries should bring their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or proof of insurance with them to Freiburg. Students from non-EU countries should preferably take out health insurance in Freiburg with a statutory health insurance fund. All statutory health insurance funds offer special rates for students (approx. €100/month).
  • Public liability insurance: We highly recommend taking out private public liability insurance.
  • Your semester fee includes insurance through the Student Council against some claims that can occur in direct connection with your studies. You can obtain further information from .

Semesterticket

Once you have registered at the University of Freiburg, you can buy a Semesterticket. This is valid for one semester (October to March/April to September) and entitles you to use all the buses, city and local railways, as well as regional railways (only 2nd class) within the RVF transport district.

Freiburg students who do not have a Semesterticket can have a free “19-Uhr” card issued, which entitles them to use all the above means of RVF transport after 7 p.m. daily.

IMPORTANT: Please always take your Semesterticket / “19-Uhr” card, Unicard, up-to-date matriculation certificate and an official photo ID every time you travel!
