Academic Advising
For detailed information about the structure of your studies, examination regulations, study conditions, and study methods, contact the academic advisor at the department or institute responsible for your field of study. A list of contact details can be found in the list of degree programs.
Psychotherapeutic Counseling Services at the Studierendenwerk Freiburg-Schwarzwald
The psychotherapeutically and psychoanalytically trained counselors at the Studierendenwerk Freiburg help you find solutions to both personal and study-related problems. An appointment is required for individual counseling sessions, but the counseling service also offers an open consultation hour once a week without appointment. Counseling is available in multiple languages. All counseling sessions are of course strictly confidential.
Integration Assistance (“Eingliederungshilfe”): Study Assistants and Study-Related Aids
In some cases, studying can only be managed with personal assistance or special financial support. For students, this includes, for example, a personal study assistant or study-related aids. Integration assistance can be applied for if your own income or assets are not sufficient and no other service provider is responsible. Social assistance is always subordinate.
The social assistance office of the municipality in which you live is responsible for granting integration assistance; for students residing in Freiburg, it is the Office for Social Affairs and Seniors (“Amt für Soziales und Senioren”). Before applying, it is advisable to clarify eligibility and documentation requirements in a personal meeting with the responsible contact person.
Study Assistants
Study assistants are usually fellow students from the same semester or higher. They help students with a disability or chronic illness with routine tasks related to their studies. They may take notes, help preparing and reviewing classes, read study literature for students with a visual impairment and/or support them in using the library. The funding for study assistants can be applied for via Integration Assistance (“Eingliederungshilfe”).
Students usually find an assistant on their own, for example through the Studierendenwerk's Job Placement Service. Job postings for study assistants can also be sent out by the department coordinator/academic advisor of your degree program. You can find their contact details here.
ID Card for People with a Severe Disability (“Schwerbehindertenausweis”)
The ID card for people with a severe disability is issued by the Pension Office (“Versorgungsamt”) upon request (§ 152 SGB IX). People with a degree of disability (“GdB”) of at least 50 are considered having a severe disability. The applicant’s place of residence, habitual place of stay, or workplace must be legally located within the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany. Individuals whose disability do not meet the criteria for a severe disability, but who have a degree of disability of at least 30, may be treated as equivalent to a person with a severe disability if they are unable to obtain or retain suitable employment without equalization because of their disability.
In addition to the ID card for people with a severe disability, if you meet certain criteria, you may be eligible for a supplementary sheet (“Beiblatt”) which allows free transportation on local public transport. Information and applications can be obtained from the Pension Office Freiburg and Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald (“Versorgungsamt”).
